You’ve got a book in the longbox that feels like it might be worth grading. Cover looks sharp, spine’s tight, colors are strong. But CGC’s not cheap — between the submission fee, the pre-screen, shipping both ways, and the wait, you’re 4-6 months out and $60-150 in the hole before you find out if the book even holds a 9.4.

Quick Answer

Grade a raw comic when its expected slabbed value, minus grading costs, is at least 2× the current raw value. Below that multiple, the risk of a lower-than-hoped grade eats your margin and you’re better off selling raw. Above 2×, even a below-expected grade usually still leaves you ahead.

Is it worth it? This guide is the math on that decision, book by book. When the slab premium pays for itself, when it doesn’t, and how to tell before you ship anything to Sarasota.

The Short Answer

Grade a book when the expected slabbed value minus grading costs is at least 2x the current raw value. Below that multiple, the risk of a lower-than-expected grade eats your margin and you’d have been better off selling raw. Above 2x, even a below-expected grade usually leaves you ahead.

The 2x rule cuts through 90% of the “should I grade this?” question. The rest of this guide is how to figure out which side of the line your book falls on.

What Grading Actually Costs in 2026

The all-in cost of grading a single book through CGC in 2026 runs $60-150 depending on tier and turnaround. Here’s the breakdown:

  • CGC economy tier: ~$35 per book at time of writing, but limited to books valued under $400 and often has multi-month turnaround.
  • CGC modern tier: ~$25 per book, but only for post-1975 books valued under $400.
  • CGC value tier: ~$45 per book, up to $1,000 declared value, faster turnaround.
  • Shipping both ways: $15-40 depending on how many books and whether you buy insurance (you should).
  • Pressing (optional): $10-25 if you want to remove spine ticks, non-color-breaking creases, or bends before grading.

Realistic all-in cost per book: $60-100 for modern/economy, $90-150 if you add pressing and use the value tier. That’s your breakeven — the slab premium has to clear this before the book is even worth submitting.

When Grading Always Pays

Three scenarios where the math almost always works in your favor.

Silver age or older keys in high raw grade

If you have a silver age key that raw-grades in the 8.5+ range, grading is almost always the move. The slabbed premium on silver age keys at 9.0+ is enormous — often 3-5x the raw value. Even a below-expected grade result usually clears the submission cost several times over.

Modern hot spec books at raw 9.6+

When a modern spec book is running hot — MCU announcement, character reintroduction, artist tribute — the slabbed 9.8 premium can be 4-6x the raw value. Turnaround times matter here: you want the slab back while the market is still hot. Value tier or express is worth the extra cost if the spec window is closing.

Any bronze age key raw-grading 9.0+

Bronze age keys at 9.0 or higher clear the 2x threshold reliably. This is the sweet spot for collectors who inherited or picked up run comics decades ago in strong condition. Books like Hulk #181, Iron Fist #14, Werewolf by Night #32 — any of these in near-mint raw shape is a submit-immediately decision.

When Grading Almost Never Pays

These are the books that lose money in the CGC submission process more often than they make it.

Modern non-key books

Grading a non-key modern book almost always loses money. There’s no scarcity to unlock, the CGC 9.8 census is already massive, and the slab premium over raw for a run issue is often smaller than the submission cost. Don’t submit non-keys unless you have a personal reason to.

Books below raw 8.5

The slab premium is grade-tiered. At 7.5 or 8.0, the premium over raw is small and often gets eaten by submission costs. Unless it’s a golden age or major silver age key where even mid-grade slabs command a premium, books below 8.5 are usually better sold raw.

Books with restoration concerns

CGC will identify color touch, married pages, trimmed edges, and other restoration signals during grading. If the book comes back with a purple (restored) label instead of blue (universal), the value drop is typically 60-80% versus the equivalent universal grade. If there’s any restoration risk, hand-check the book carefully or get a pre-grade consult before submitting.

The Break-Even Table

Rough guide to what a book needs to be worth raw before slabbing usually pays. Assumes typical 2026 submission costs.

Book TypeMin. Raw Value to Justify SlabTypical Slab Premium
Modern key at raw 9.4+$50+2-4x
Modern non-keyRarely worth it1.2-1.5x
Bronze age key at raw 9.0+$100+2-5x
Bronze age non-key$150+1.5-2x
Silver age key at raw 8.5+$200+3-8x
Golden age of any grade$300+3-10x

How to Prep a Book Before Submission

Small things you can do to maximize your grade before the book ever leaves your hands.

  • Handle by the edges only. Fingerprint oils show up under CGC’s grading lights. Wear cotton gloves if you’re going to review the book multiple times.
  • Store flat in a mylar with acid-free backing board. This prevents new spine ticks and edge wear between decision and shipping.
  • Consider professional pressing. A $15-25 press can lift spine ticks, non-color-breaking bends, and light dents. On a border-9.4-to-9.6 book, pressing routinely pays for itself.
  • Do NOT try to clean covers. Any moisture, chemical exposure, or aggressive erasing risks color loss — and CGC will spot it as restoration.
  • Sleeve for shipping. Mylar + backing board + rigid mailer + delivery confirmation with insurance. Don’t cheap out on the box.

The Alternative: Buy Already-Slabbed

For a lot of collectors, the smartest move isn’t grading raw books — it’s buying books that are already in the slab. You know exactly what you’re getting, there’s no grade risk, no 4-6 month wait, and the book is ready for display or resale the day it arrives.

The premium you pay for a pre-graded book is essentially the “grading fee plus grade risk” that the previous submitter took on. If you’re not looking to build a submission pipeline — and most collectors shouldn’t — buying slabbed is the efficient route.

Bottom Line

The CGC decision is really a spreadsheet decision. Estimate the slab value at your target grade. Subtract submission costs and grade risk. If the answer is at least 2x the raw value, submit. If it’s less, sell raw. If it’s a modern non-key or a mid-grade non-vintage book, save the money.

Grading isn’t a magic value multiplier — it’s a targeted tool for unlocking scarcity premiums on specific books. Use it that way, and it pays off consistently.
