Why Graded Comics Matter
A graded comic is a book that has been professionally inspected, encapsulated, and assigned a numerical condition score by a certified grading service. The two services collectors trust most are CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) and CBCS (Comic Book Certification Service). Both protect your comic in a tamper-evident slab and give you a permanent, public record of its condition.
Buying graded means you skip the guesswork. You know exactly what you are getting before you click buy — and when it is time to sell, the market knows what to pay. That is why a CGC 9.8 of a key issue can sell for many multiples of an ungraded copy of the same book in the same apparent condition.
CGC vs CBCS: Whatβs the Difference?
Both CGC and CBCS use the same 10-point grading scale and the same fundamental approach: they grade the cover, spine, staples, pages, and corners independently and combine those into a single overall grade. The differences are mostly about brand recognition and label aesthetics.
CGC is the older and more recognized service. CGC slabs typically command a slight resale premium on auction sites because of brand familiarity. CBCS was founded by a former CGC president and is widely respected for its consistency and customer service. CBCS also pioneered the “verified signature” program where they witness the autograph in person.
For most buyers, the practical answer is: both grade fairly. Buy the comic, not the label. We carry both at Nostalgik Vibes because we believe both services do honest work.
Understanding Grades: From 6.0 to 9.8 and Beyond
The 10-point scale runs from 0.5 (poor) to 10.0 (gem mint). For most collectors, the range that matters is 6.0 to 9.8. Here is what those numbers mean in plain English:
- 9.8 NM/M (Near Mint/Mint): Looks brand new. Nearly invisible flaws. The grade most investment-grade buyers chase.
- 9.6 NM+: One or two minor defects. Still beautiful. Often the best value-to-grade ratio.
- 9.4 NM: Outstanding condition with very minor handling. Excellent for display.
- 9.0 VF/NM: Sharp colors, tight spine, light wear. Strong shelf piece.
- 8.0 VF: A clean, attractive copy with light defects. Where bronze age and silver age keys often sit.
- 6.0 FN: Honest reading copy. Visible wear but complete and intact.
A perfect 10.0 is exceedingly rare. The famously rumored CGC 10.0 of Action Comics #1 doesnβt exist — the highest known is a 9.0. So when you see a 9.8 of a key issue, you are looking at the upper end of what most realistically exists.
How We Authenticate Every Slab
Counterfeit slabs are a real problem in the resale market. Before any graded comic enters the Vault at Nostalgik Vibes, we verify it three ways: we cross-reference the certification number against the grading serviceβs public registry, we inspect the slab seal and label for tampering, and we compare the cover under both daylight and UV against reference scans of authentic copies.
If a slab fails any of those checks, it doesnβt make the listing. If you ever receive a piece that you have any doubt about, we cover return shipping and refund in full β no questions, no restocking fees.

β COLLECTOR QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked About Graded Comics
Q. What is CGC grading?
CGC grading is the process of having Certified Guaranty Company professionally inspect, grade on a 10-point scale, and encapsulate your comic in a tamper-evident slab. The grade is permanent, public, and recognized by buyers and sellers worldwide.
Q. CGC vs CBCS — which is better?
Both grade fairly using the same 10-point scale. CGC is the older and more recognized brand and tends to command a slight resale premium. CBCS is widely respected for consistency and pioneered the witnessed signature program. Buy the comic, not the slab brand.
Q. What does a 9.8 mean?
A 9.8 grade means Near Mint/Mint condition — the comic looks essentially brand new with only the most minor of defects, often invisible to the naked eye. It is the highest grade most collectors realistically pursue and commands a strong premium for key issues.
Q. Are graded comics worth the premium over raw copies?
For key issues and high-grade copies, yes — the certification removes condition risk, makes the comic easier to resell, and historically holds value better. For common issues in lower grades, raw is usually the better economic choice.
Q. How should I store a graded slab?
Slabs are designed to protect from light, humidity, and air, but they are not invincible. Store them upright (not stacked horizontally), out of direct sunlight, in a climate-controlled room (ideally 65-72Β°F, 40-50% humidity). Avoid attics, basements, and exterior walls.
